The crest is that of the New York Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 127th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion on 1 June 1951. It was redesignated for the 106th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on 18 February 1954. The insignia was redesignated for the 270th Armored Field Artillery Battalion on 22 April 1955. It was redesignated for the 270th Artillery Regiment on 30 March 1962. It was rescinded on 14 February 1975.
